After successfully hosting the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games swimming and diving events at the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick, we are now ready to move onto the next phase of the project. 

The facility will be transformed into a state-of-the-art local leisure centre for Sandwell and the region. It will open to the public in summer 2023. 

It will include a 50 metre Olympic-size swimming pool, a 10 metre high competitive dive tower and a 25 metre dive pool, along with 1,000 spectator seats.

In addition to this the centre will boast the following facility mix:

• a community swimming pool;
• three 150sqm activity studios;
• two 4-court sports hall;
• 108-station gym;
• 25-station ladies-only gym;
• indoor cycling studio;
• changing village for up to 600
• dry diving centre with mini floor trampolines;
• sauna/steam room;
• new football pitch and changing facilities
• new urban park and children’s play area
• parking for up to 300 vehicles
• and a café.

Fun facts about the Sandwell Aquatics Centre

• More than 190,000 tiles have been installed at the venue and, between them, the pools contain 1.2million gallons of water. They took two weeks to fill.
• The Sandwell Aquatics Centre hosted 66 medal events in total during the Games – more medal moments than any other Birmingham 2022 venue.
• The seating capacity for the Games was approximately 5,000 seats. The leisure facility after the Games will have 1,000 permanent seats.
• Building Sandwell Aquatics Centre helped to create jobs for local people and local apprentices. Local businesses also benefitted by being part of the supply chain.
• The state-of-the-art facility includes a 50 metre Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as a 25 metre diving pool and a community swimming pool.
• A training/warm-up pool was built on the site for the Games. This will be replaced after the Games with additional leisure facilities.
